Since my last post I have met with the CSULB Director of the Animation about twice. I have storyboarded 3 scenes for my film. I found a great book to assist me in my research about UPA studios. It's
Cartoon Modern. (blog located here: http://cartoonmodern.blogsome.com/) Where am I now? I believe I have found my main characters. I still need to name them. I've storyboarded about 3 scenes and have done tons of research. At first I thought the design theory of UPA studios was simple and easy to grasp. I was entirely wrong. In the process of designing a character in a 1950's graphic cartoon style, I marvel at how the designers of
Unicorn in the Garden or
Rooty toot toot designed their characters. What i thought would take minutes is really taking hours of studying, drawing and redrawing. I have to understand the elements of design to really capture the essense of the 1950's design style. I started by playing around with shapes then moved to doing head studies. When drawing the heads, I had to remember to NOT to build a character based on circlar soft shapes. That was a challenge, especially with designing the body. Im happy with the Male characters body, not so much with the female character.
I'm in the process of naming my main girl and guy.
